Senior Data Scientist - Health Systems

Location: St. Thomas Community Health Center

Work Week: Full Time

Salary: Salary negotiable according to experience ($80,000-$160,000). Full benefits included.
Work Location: This position will be initially remote and have the option to transition to St. Thomas Community Health Center locations around New Orleans, LA.

Position Summary:

The Senior Data Scientist will establish and expand St. Thomas’s ability to analyze data and present findings to medical and organizational leadership. This will allow St. Thomas’s leadership to enhance integration of services across the health system, improve patient care, optimize operational processes, and to find the most meaningful and impactful interventions.

As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), St. Thomas provides healthcare to economically and medically vulnerable populations. The Senior Data Scientist position will play an important role in our mission to advance anti-racism and equity in healthcare. This position will have a direct impact on St. Thomas’s ability to optimize resources and produce the best possible outcomes for hundreds of thousands of patients from underserved communities per year.

In this position, the Senior Data Scientist will be working with the medical and organizational leadership team to define and build the analytical tools and infrastructure for operational research and analysis. The Senior Data Scientist will be part of the St. Thomas Community Center and will work full-time with the leadership team (as well as clients, data stewards, project/program managers, and other IT teams).

The position will turn data into critical information and knowledge that can be used to make sound organizational decisions. Other responsibilities will include driving data collection, providing data analyses that are congruent and reliable, proposing innovative ways to look at problems by mining available data, and mentoring leadership and staff on analytic tools and results. This position will involve learning about the realities of medical care and adjusting to integrate these factors into all data analyses, interpretations, and data-driven recommendations.

Projects which the position will be responsible to develop or maintain:

  • Operational Analytics – Lead data collection and analyses relevant to clinic operations
  • Finance Analytics – Lead analyses for clinical quality scoring and reimbursement
  • Decision Support – Provide data-driven organization-wide decision support

Examples of clients supported and degree of client interaction:

  • The Senior Data Scientist will be working with a community of engaged stakeholders, especially medical directors and organizational leadership, who are currently generating questions and hypotheses to make decisions that lead the direction of the health system.

Degree of supervision – how work is assigned, carried out, and reviewed:

  • The Senior Data Scientist will be working closely with medical and organizational leadership teams:
  • Substantial autonomy to drive data collection and perform data analyses related to clinical care processes, business development, quality improvement, and finance
  • Substantial autonomy to define and build the analytical infrastructure for operational analysis
  • This will be a highly collaborative role, with regular meetings

Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Experience leading data science projects that demonstrate operational value and savings
  • Experience with automated analyses and machine learning preferred
  • Programming skills required (subset of SQL, Databricks, Jupyter, Python, R)
  • Experience with mentoring staff and presenting to organizational leadership preferred

Education:

  • Masters in data science, biostatistics, computer science, health systems management, or related quantitative field; PhD preferred but not required.

Experience:

  • Requires 3 or more years of relevant quantitative research and analytics experience
  • Requires 3 or more years of statistical programming experience
  • Requires some background in health systems or organizational operations
