3D Mammography is Here!

Thanks to the Susan G. Komen New Orleans Affiliate and the Louisiana Breast and Cervical Health Program, our Breast Center has recently updated its equipment with a new 3D mammogram machine. 3D imaging can enhance the radiologist’s ability to detect breast problems. As before, we have a computer assisted process for further aiding the radiologist in detecting breast abnormalities.

Our Breast Center is open Monday – Friday, from 8AM – 5PM, and the second Saturday of each month from 8AM – noon. Spanish is spoken in the center.

December, 2020 Update: The St.Thomas Breast Center will no longer provide mammography.  We began this service when Hurricane Katrina closed the large hospitals in 2005. After fifteen years of proudly supporting our community’s needs, our equipment is aging and we feel it is time to refer patients to larger, state-of-the-art imaging centers that provide mammography, breast ultrasound and breast MRI.

Our Breast Center staff will continue to work hard to help patients get appropriate breast cancer screening. The center will assist patients in getting appointments at other imaging centers for mammograms and will provide guidance if problems are discovered that need further diagnostic testing.  All prior mammograms done at St.Thomas can be retrieved and sent to any imaging center the patient selects.

St. Thomas continues to receive funds from the LSU Breast and Cervical Health Program and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation for education and navigation services. Our staff is proud to continue our 15-year tradition of aiding women in the early detection of breast cancer.

The Latest: In the News & Around the Community

Number of mumps cases in Louisiana rises to 30, centered on college campuses

The number of mumps cases in Louisiana was up to 30 as of March 30th, prompting warnings from college administrators and state health officials. There are signs that the vaccine has been effective. Those who get it and contract mumps usually have a milder case of the disease than people who don’t get the shot, said Dr. Lorna Seybolt of St. Thomas Community Health Center. 6 takeaways from Louisiana’s new physical education rules

The Louisiana Department of Education released new physical education standards on April 8th. They don’t change the basic requirement that public school students take 30 minutes of physical education class per day. Recess doesn’t count. High school students must take three semesters of gym, one of which can be replaced by extra-curricular sports. There are five standards, with different tasks depending on the grade.
